New Things

Tuesday, December 11, 2012

For awhile now I have been struggling with my blog's niche. When I started this blog it was mainly about shopping. I had an hour long lunch break that I mainly spent killing time by wandering around Anthropologie or the Pink Palm 4-5 days a week and pretty much all my time online was spent perusing various online stores and other fashion/style related sites. At the time, style (and keeping up with everything in all my favorite stores) was my passion. Don't get me wrong - I still love to shop and put together outfits, but it's not the only things I'm passionate about anymore.

When I first started blogging, one of my favorite things about it was the relationships I developed with other bloggers. Then, after about a year of blogging I took an unexpected break for a few months (I was too stressed out by things going on in my life - nothing horrible, just a really negative work situation/realizing I absolutely hated the career I had chosen). When I finally got back to blogging it just didn't seem the same. I didn't feel as connected to my blog as I had in the past and I couldn't figure out what had changed. Hence, my blog identity crisis.

Anyways, while having my blog identity crisis I realized something. Although I really enjoy posting about fashion and style, it's not what I'm truly passionate about - so obviously I'm not going to feel as connected to it! I've made a lot of changes in my life (some more externally obvious and some more in just the way I've decided to think about/deal with things/live my life) and yet I wasn't really reflecting any of that in my content. So - I made a decision.

I've started a new blog to share what I really love - creating things. Delightfully DIY (my new blog) will have tons of diy tutorials (which I guess is probably obvious). I'm also going to be posting free downloads and printables. I am always making things in Illustrator (like patterns, backgrounds, social media icons, etc.) that I never end up using - so I've decided to share! If you like creative things and DIY projects, please come check out Delightfully DIY!

I'm not giving up on Not Without Heels though - I am still going to keep blogging here (because after all I really do still enjoy fashion)!

Holiday Bling Sale!

Friday, December 7, 2012

Happy Friday! So much has been going on around here - I can't believe how long it's been since I've blogged. I've been busy working on something super exciting that I can't wait to share with y'all on Monday!

In the meantime...

When I got word that JoJo Loves You is having their Holiday Bling Sale I had to share! I love their Mini Bling Earrings and will definitely be taking advantage of their sale to purchase a few more pairs. Plus, with Christmas around the corner (seriously - how is it already December 7th?!) these would make great little gifts or stocking stuffers. The sale is available through their online store and runs from December 7 through December 9.

Happy Shopping!

Update - as I was browsing through the mini bling colors to pick which ones to buy I came across something seriously cool. If you lose one of your JoJo Loves You Earrings you can buy a single earring to replace the one you lost. I don't know about y'all, but for me earrings seem to be one of those things that inevitably go missing and I love the idea of being able to easily get a replacement.

Danish Wedding Cookie Recipe

Not Without Heels: Danish Wedding Cookie Recipe

I'm going to make a bold statement and say that Danish Wedding Cookies (the Keebler ones that come in the Barbie-pink box) might just be my favorite cookies ever. I haven't been able to find them since we moved here though, so last week I decided to try making them.

After some searching online I found a recipe and was pleasantly surprised when they turned out very close to what I wanted. They were so close, in fact, that I knew with a little tweaking I could come up with a recipe that would give me exactly what I was longing for in the pink box. I tried again a couple nights ago and I hate to toot my own horn, but these are awesome!

DANISH WEDDING COOKIES {KEEBLER COPYCAT RECIPE}
Yield: 24 cookies

INGREDIENTS:
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup rolled oats, roughly chopped in food processor
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/8 teaspoon salt (only add if using unsalted butter)
1/4 cup powdered sugar, plus more for rolling
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup mini chocolate chips

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

2. Combine flour, rolled oats, cinnamon, butter, salt, powdered sugar, and vanilla in a large mixing bowl.

3. Beat on medium speed until a stiff dough forms. Add chocolate chips and continue to beat until fully mixed in.

4. Shape dough into balls and place on ungreased cookie sheets, flattening balls slightly.

5. Bake until edges are just starting to brown, about 12 minutes.

6. Remove cookies to wire racks to cool slightly. Once they are cool enough to handle, but still warm, roll cookies in powdered sugar and return to wire racks to fully cool.

7. Cool completely, then roll again in powdered sugar.

Enjoy!

Friday's Fancies: Bonfire Beauties

Not Without Heels: Bonfire Attire
Sweater, J.CREW | Puffer Vest, J.CREW | Tote, MADEWELL | Jeans, J BRAND | Scarf, MODCLOTH | Earrings, MODCLOTH | Socks, GAP | Boots, FRYE

I love a good bonfire. So, of course, when I saw that this week's Friday's Fancies theme was a beautiful bonfire outfit I knew I had to play along! Somehow I doubt I'll come across at any bonfires in Brooklyn, but when I go to Florida for the holidays next month I'm sure I'll find myself sitting at one there.

When I went to link my outfit over on Long Distance Loving I noticed that Alison had also used the save puffer vest from J.Crew in her post. I mean seriously, who can resist a hot pink vest!

It has been one crazy week around here! We were incredibly lucky not to lose power during the hurricane, but trying to get anywhere after the storm has turned out to be incredibly tricky at best and more likely impossible. I think most (or at least a good amount) of the subways are supposed to be running today, but gas is still a problem. Hubs waited in line to get gas for over 2 hours last night (which compared to other wait times I've heard is pretty short)!

They just reopened Prospect Park over the weekend so now at least Mason and I can go on our walks in the park again, but there are still so many trees down. On our walk this morning I realized that it is definitely past time for me to pull out all my scarves and gloves (and maybe so shopping for some new ones, too)!

Hurricanes + Halloween

Hurricane Sandy has us all snuggled up inside our apartment for the next couple days. Well, I'm snuggled up with the furs and hubs headed for the hospital before the break of dawn this morning. I'm hoping he's not stuck there until tomorrow!

With Halloween just a couple days away (and me with nothing to do but stay inside today) I put together a pretty masquerade costume for inspiration! I have such an obsession with masquerades. They're beautiful, mysterious, and often a little bit creepy - in my opinion perfect for Halloween. Oh - and while I was looking for a pretty mask I came across a great DIY version from Sprinkles in Spring. Seriously I think this lady is a genius for coming up with this. I want to make one even if I don't have a masquerade to attend!

Not Without Heels: Snapshots of Autumn

I am in LOVE with the beautiful fall colors in Brooklyn! Mason and I go on walks in Prospect Park every day and I just can't help snapping pictures of all the pretty colors on my iphone (and thinking I should bring my actual camera sometime because my iphone photography skills are seriously lacking). Isn't fall stunning?!
