Happy Thanksgiving

Thursday, November 26, 2009

I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving full of family and lots of yummy food! Remember all the things you are thankful for today. I have so many reasons to be thankful. Some of the things at the top of my list are (of course) the good Lord for watching over all of us, my wonderful family and friends, my fabulous fiancé who I am marrying in a month, my mother and all she has done to make my upcoming wedding just the way I’ve always imagined it, and being able to spend Thanksgiving (and my birthday!) with all of them. What is everyone else thankful for?

Hanukkah Fun

Wednesday, November 25, 2009

So I know Thanksgiving is tomorrow (can’t wait), but Hanukkah starts on December 11th and I’m so excited to decorate for the holidays when the fiancé and I get back to Virginia. I want our home to look like a beautiful, sparkly winter wonderland! I got a head start on decorations yesterday while shopping with my soon-to-be mother in law. She bought the fiancé and me a gorgeous menorah for Hanukkah. It’s so pretty I almost don’t want to burn candles in it, but I guess that would kind of defeat the purpose.

I’m kind of thinking about getting a plain silver menorah to use and keeping this one for decoration! I found one I like at Pottery Barn.

I also really love the Etched Mercury Vases from Pottery Barn.

Crate and Barrel has some really pretty candles!

They also have super cute cookie cutters (which we already have thanks to two of our lovely friends who included them in our wedding gift) and I love the blue shimmer sugar! I love holiday baking!

I realized I never put up any pictures from my bridal shower. So here’s one!

Traveling and Weekend Recap

Monday, November 23, 2009

On Saturday the fiancé and I headed back to Orlando for Thanksgiving. Usually I am a very organized with packing (spreadsheets involved), but with me being super sick last week and then the fiancé getting sick packing for this trip was a little insane! We did all our packing on Saturday morning. About 2 hours before we needed to leave the house I realized my shower was the next day and I didn’t have any shoes I wanted to wear with my dress. I meant to buy some while the fiancé and I were shopping at Short Pump on Friday, but then I got a call from the Lilly store that the tailor had brought my dress back. So of course we had to make it back in time to pick it up!

I decided very last minute (and still not completely packed) to make a quick trip to our mall. I didn’t have luck finding anything to go with my dress, but I did find two super cute pairs of shoes on sale! (Which turned out to be fine since I am apparently an idiot and had a pair of navy and green shoes that I forgot about that matched perfectly!) I’ve somewhat recently discovered MaxStudio and I adore their shoes. The leather they use is just so pretty!

I also found a fabulous pair of booties (or maybe shooties?) at Nine West.

Even with my last minute shopping adventures we made it to the airport in plenty of time and are now in sunny Florida. I already miss the Poe Cat, but he is happy at home in Virginia with his cat sitter!

(I don't know why his eyes look so crazy in pictures! They are really a pretty shade of green.)

My mom’s best friend hosted my bridal shower at her house yesterday and I had such a great time! Since all my family and friends live in Florida I haven’t seen anyone in so long. We started the afternoon off with mimosas (could there be a better beginning?) and it was so great getting to catch up. Everyone was so sweet and I received tons of wonderful gifts. One of my faves was the Tiffany champagne flutes. Although everyone really brought such thoughtful gifts. The theme seemed to be items for the kitchen and I could not be more excited! I love to cook and I can’t wait to try everything out! (And I'm sure the fiance is pretty excited for me to get cooking as well.) I will be very busy writing thank you notes for the next few days!

The Battle of the Cat Hair

Thursday, November 19, 2009

Any other pet parents feel like they are constantly battling to keep their home free of pet hair?! It's everywhere! I swiffer/vacuum everyday, but what about all the other surfaces? The Poe Cat (like all other cats I'm sure) likes to climb around and sit on just about any surface he can find...leaving a trail of cat hairs as he goes. I've discovered two fabulous products recently that I think are actually making a difference: the Pledge Fabric Sweeper and the bamboo Furbuster brush. Poe Cat is so cute when I brush him...he purrs and rubs his face on anything nearby.

Last night, after attempting to remove the daily collection of Poe hair from the house, I decided to do a little quick jewelry making. I love the cut of these glass beads...and I'm so into anything that sparkles! I'm not sure about the ribbon though, it's a little unruly.

I still need a pink necklace to wear with one of my dresses, so I made this one. I'm not sure if I'll end of wearing it though. I usually go for something that's a little bigger overall, but I felt with the big pink pendant (glass or CZ...I can't remember which) adding too much might look tacky. I just stuck with the two tiny rose colored swarovski crystals.

I'm so into gray this fall and I love these shell beads!

Shoes and More Shopping

Tuesday, November 17, 2009

I've been on a serious hunt lately for shoes to go with all my pre-wedding event dresses. Sure, I already have shoes that would go with them - but I'm such a shoe addict. Why pass up the chance to buy more? (Not that I ever really need a reason.) I am making jewelry to go with each dress, but I want to see the dress with the shoes before deciding on jewelry. Last night, I finally found silver pumps! (One of the colors I'm searching for.) I wanted some almost obnoxiously silver shoes, but was having such a hard time finding them. I so did not want the usual strappy silver shoe and that color can either look really fabulous or incredibly cheap. The latter, of course, is just not ok! Luckily, I found these great looking heels on Zappos last night! I hope they look as fabulous in person.

After ordering the shoes I decided to go ahead and make the bracelet to go with them. (No necklace because of the neckline of the dress.) Nothing too crazy, just silver pearls and a few swarovski crystals.I still need some bright pink heels. Same problem again with the color though - it's just so hard to tell how they will look in person when I'm staring at them on my computer! I also need a pair of black statement shoes for my going away dress. Any suggestions?

My shopping continued with a little lunchtime sale shopping at Anthro today. (New markdowns!) I bought the Revere Blouse and the Slant-Striped Sweater. I am in love with all the long sweaters out now, but for my height/size they kind of overwhelm me. I think this might be as close as I can get to a sweater coat!

Stuck at Home

Friday, November 13, 2009

I’ve been sick and stuck at home for the past two days with nothing to do but shop online and snuggle with the Poe Cat. I know some people would love to have two days to relax at home (except the whole feeling awful part), but I am not one of them. I always like to be busy and I’m going stir-crazy at home not being able to do anything! It’s been in the 30s/40s here and rainy the past three days so I haven’t even been able to go outside. (I figured freezing rain might not be best for recovering from a cold/ear infection).

While looking out the window at the gloomy weather I decided ordering some cold-weather suitable Lilly would brighten my day! Lilly is always perfect for brightening a dull day. I found this super cute corduroy skirt on sale at a Lilly boutique online. I also found a pink jacket that looks warm and comfy – exactly what I need right now!

I couldn’t find a picture of the jacket in pink, but here it is in navy.

(both pics from splashofpink.com)

During lunch on Wednesday (before I was attacked by a cold) I found a pair of DGM by Francesco Morichetti black riding boots at Scarpa – the only decent shoe store in town. I had to go back to work and get opinions on them compared to another pair I was thinking about ordering, so I put them on hold. I planned to go get them on Thursday, which of course I couldn’t do because I was sick at home, but luckily the fiancé was sweet enough to go get them for me! They are fabulous! I consider this quite an accomplishment since I’ve been looking for black riding boots for months!

Also bought a cute pair of pink Kate Spade shoes last week on ebay that arrived today! I'm still a little unsure about ebay, but sometimes I come across fun finds.

Busy Day

Tuesday, November 10, 2009

Such a busy day today! Between work, errands, and my JL meeting tonight I’ve hardly had a moment to breathe. I came home to find the Poe Cat playing in a Target bag. He loves plastic (not sure if that’s normal) and always gets excited to play with bags. I knew I wouldn’t be home a lot today so I left it out for him to play with and he definitely had fun!

I finally picked up my bridal shower dress from the Lilly store during my lunch hour! The tailor did such an amazing job. I loved this dress before, but it just fits me so much better now. He took it in on the sides, added another dart in the front so it would be more fitted there, and I think re-did the darts in the back. I know I’ve said how important I think it is to have a good tailor, but I’ve just got to say it again! I very rarely find anything that actually fits me and just about everything I buy has to be altered. It’s incredibly frustrating, but finding a good tailor I can rely on has made shopping so much easier!

(Disregard how disheveled I look - it's been a long day!)

While I was there, I also picked up the pink corduroy Meggie skirt. I feel like just about everything out right now, except from Lilly, is either black or gray. Don’t get me wrong, I love some black and grey, but I also need some color! So excited to add a bright pink corduroy skirt to the fall/winter wardrobe!

I wore some of my fave shoes today and I thought I’d share!

Shooties: A New Fave

Monday, November 9, 2009

My first opinion of booties was not a nice one – I thought they were some of the ugliest things I’d ever seen. Especially since I am petite, I thought they would cut my leg line off at the ankle and not create the look of longer legs that I am constantly trying to achieve. (I’m always trying to look taller than I actually am!) I must now admit that I am definitely warming up to them and a couple months ago I thought bought my first pair – Maxstudio Xplore. These seem like more of a shoe/bootie hybrid than just a bootie and I absolutely love them!

I decided the hybrid was perfect for me and that I must purchase more…I just had to find them! Well, while I was in the airport this weekend I picked up a copy of the new Lucky issue (can’t travel without at least one shopping/fashion magazine) and what did I find…an article on shooties: a shoe/bootie hybrid! Fabulous! I was so excited that there were others out there also looking for the hybrid. (I showed the fiancé, but for some reason he was just not as thrilled as I thought he should be!) There are so many cute pairs. I can’t wait to purchase some of them. My favorites are Alexandria from Coach.

Anyone else in love with shooties?

I Love November

Tuesday, November 3, 2009

November is definitely my favorite month! I’m already so excited for Thanksgiving at my parent’s house (which happens to fall on my birthday this year). All this cool, crisp fall weather has put me in the mood for lots of cooking, crafting, and decorating.

While wandering through Michaels on Sunday I was inspired by all the fall colors in the floral section and decided to make a wreath for our front door. (Nevermind that I have absolutely no idea how to make a wreath.) I came home with lots of flowers (which turned out to be way too many), a wire wreath frame (that I now think you’re probably supposed to use when making a wreath with garland or moss), and some floral wire. After finally deciding what I was going to do, here’s what I ended up with.

I actually really like it. Although, I think the next time I decide to make a wreath I’ll stop for directions. Any suggestions for other fun fall crafts?

The Red Pepper Vodka Penne I was prepping for turned out really great! I couldn’t believe how much spice the vodka picked up from the red pepper after sitting for just two days.

(Again - ignore crazy Southwestern plates)

Halloween and Yummy Food

Sunday, November 1, 2009

The fiancé and I are not really big on Halloween, but we decided to be festive and stop by the med school Halloween party last night. My favorite costumes were a couple dressed as a southern belle and confederate soldier. Her costume looked just like what Scarlett O’Hara wore when she went to visit Rhett Butler in jail. I told the fiancé this was on our must do list for some Halloween in the future.

(I don't think we're very scary vampires)

The Poe Cat dressed up for Halloween as a black cat (he obviously put a lot of time and effort into his costume)! I so wanted to make him a cute costume, but he gets all grumpy if we even try to make him wear a collar.

Here’s a much cuter picture of the fiancé and the Poe Cat

It’s been such a cold, rainy weekend here – perfect for lots of cooking and staying inside. Unfortunately, the fiancé had his daily date with the library, so I decided to make something yummy for him to come home to. I made quiche Florentine for dinner and a pumpkin cream cheese roll for dessert. Fiance loved it! I’ve made many a quiche, but had never used this recipe before. I must say, I really liked it. I had no issues with it setting, and it didn’t call for heavy cream.

I’ve never made a pumpkin cream cheese roll, but it was super easy too! It turned out so yummy, I have a feeling I’ll be making this again soon.

As I was putting together my weekly shopping list I came upon a recipe for Red Pepper Vodka Penne. I have always wanted to make this, never have. I mixed the red pepper and the vodka together to sit for two days before I can make it. I’ll update on how this one turns out…
