In Need of Advice!

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

So last week my laptop decided to die on me. More specifically the man at BestBuy told me the hard drive failed...great. Instead of paying the $4oo it would cost to have it fixed (since this is the second time in like 6 months I would have to restore it to the factory setting) I am just going to buy a new one!

My dilemma is: what brand? My last two laptops have been HPs and have given me problems...so HP is out. I'm thinking either Mac or Dell. Husband has a Mac and really loves it, but I can't decide if I want to make the switch from a PC. Help! Does anyone have any experience with or opinions on Mac or Dell? I am so over dealing with computer issues...I just want one that is reliable!

  1. Personally, I hate Dell laptops - I think they're less reliable than HPs (and I've had several HPs). I have a Mac and love it, but if I needed a new computer today, I'd probably get a Sony. I had a Sony years ago and loved it, and you can get one for a better price than the Mac.

  2. I've had horrible experiences with both Dell laptops and desktops. MDH has a Sony Vaio and loves it. I love Macs. Two years ago I upgraded from a MacBook to a MacBook Pro and definitely regret the decision. My MB Pro has been nothing but problems. The customer service with Macs is great, but I definitely recommend the standard MacBook. I will be downgrading to it again when it's time for a new laptop.

    Hope that helps!!

  3. I am switching to a Mac in the next couple of months. I've heard they're less susceptible to viruses/spam. And, after dealing with Apple for my iPod, I am very impressed with their customer service. Good luck with the next one (whatever it may be)!

  4. Oh my goodness I despise my Dell!!! I got a Mac several months ago and I LOVE it. No problems whatsoever. The transition was a little strange, but once you learn the tricks, you are golden :) My Dell was constantly crashing and Windows made me want to pull my hair out! The Mac is also great since you don't need virus protection software...it is all built in. You really can't go wrong with Mac!!!!

  5. When my PC gave up on me, I took a leap of faith into the Mac world! Now I am addicted! I have the MacBook and have no major complaints (The case around the screen cracked, I sent it back, they replaced the frame, then it cracked again). Other than that physical flaw it has been amazing. I got it in 2007, it is still lightening fast, never had a virus, great for work or school projects! I can't wait to get a desktop! Make the switch!

  6. I can't live without my MAC. I honestly can't stand to use our home pc or my kid's laptops. I tried using my daughter's new sony laptop on Saturday and I hate it! MAC is so much better!

  7. Another vote for a Mac here. However, if you're only using your computer for basic things (web, email, office suite, etc) it might not necessarily be worth the extra money over a PC. I've partial to Macs because I like to use the Adobe Creative Suite.

The last Mac I had stopped working because of logic board problems, so Macs aren't without their flaws. My MacBook Pro has been a dream, though.

If I were you, I'd at least strongly consider making the switch :)

  8. I just got the Dell Mini! I looooove it. I was debating between that and the Mac too. But for my purposes it made more since to go with the mini. I'm not downloading a whole lot of stuff and I am only on it maybe a couple hours a day. Unlike Brett who is on his 24/7.

It will also be really easy to travel with!

I think either choice will work just fine you just need to find what works best for your purposes!

  9. I've only had a HP PC, never a laptop. I do have a Dell laptop, and it's been excellent. I don't use it for much more than e-mail, internet use, etc. Just fun stuff :) And it's been great.

  10. I have a MacBook Pro and love it. Though I'm not convinced it was worth $2000+. My husband has a couple of Sony Vaios (desktops, not laptops) and he loves them. Maybe check to see what Sony has available now?

  11. I have a MAC and absolutely love it! I work at a magazine and we have to use MACs so I made the switch after college. It takes a little bit to get used to it, but I find it's much easier to use than a PC. I'm sure if you go to the Apple store they'll help you test it out. Good luck!

  12. MAC! I had a Dell for about 4 years and towards the end, it just drove me crazy! Mac's are more expensive, but totally worth it! I just got mine in December and I'm obsessed! :) BTW: I got a new blog address: www.lindseylw.blogspot.com
