My First 5K!

Monday, April 19, 2010

I ran my first 5K this weekend and had so much fun! I ran it in 31 minutes...I think I could have done it a little faster, but I was afraid of starting out too fast and getting worn out, so I went slow in the beginning. My goals for this race were (1) to finish without stopping to walk and (2) not to feel like I was going to die when I finished! I ran the entire time and I felt great when I finished...so I'm thinking it was definitely a success! Even better, hubby said watching me run inspired him to start running too! I think I'm going to even be able to get him out for a run after work today! I can't wait to find my next race to run! So far I've looked on active.com, but I don't really know where else to look for upcoming races. Where do you find out about races in your area?

After the race (and a shower) we drove to Short Pump (an outside mall about an hour away from where we live) to do a little shopping. It was such a gorgeous day! Hubby and I ended up going on a bit of a shopping spree and got tons of great things! One of my favorite purchases is this pair of turquoise heels from Nordstrom. I have no idea what I'm going to wear them with, but they were just so delightfully bright I had to buy them!

I also bought this super cute Nike running skirt.

I wasn't sure about these at first, but I saw several women running in them this weekend so I thought I'd give it a try! As if I needed another reason to shop, I am now in love with finding cute running clothes! Last night I ordered a turquoise half-zip on sale from lucy.com.

(This isn't the exact one I ordered, but it's the same color)

I'm having a difficult time finding running tops that I like! I want something fitted (but not super tight) with short sleeves.

Maybe it's just the time of year, but I feel like everything I'm seeing is sleeveless. I'm sure y'all have noticed by now that my skin in white as a ghost so I definitely need my shoulders covered if I'm outside! Honestly I'd rather wear long sleeves to hide from the sun, but I think I might overheat! What type of running/workout tops do you like? Where do y'all find activewear?

  1. Good for you on the 5k! I love running weekend races--I love the festival atmosphere and the camraderie, and I feel like I run faster than I would if I were out by myself on a Saturday morning. Congrats on a great performance!

Check out the Charlottesville Track Club (http://www.charlottesvilletrackclub.org/), Richmond Road Runners (http://www.rrrc.org/) and other similar groups for lists of upcoming races.

Also, the calendar at Washington Running Report lists races around the D.C. area, which seems to include most of Virginia: http://www.runwashington.com/calendar.htm

  2. That's a fabulous time in my opinion! I love the running skorts and I wear them just to work out (I'm not a big runner).

I LOVE all my running skirts. So comfy - I even wear them to the gym. I'm a huge fan of www.roadrunnersports.com for shoes/clothes and race info.

  5. Congratulations on finishing your first race! You did AMAZING. I pushed myself sooo hard in my first 5K I felt like I was going to die afterwards and swore I was never going to do it again!

I really only like running in short sleeves or long sleeves too! I find a lot of good stuff new on Ebay. I got a brand new brooks top for 5.00! It is worth a look!

So happy Nick is running with you too! Tell him to give Brett a call. Brett swears he will start after the STEP. For now he is just obsessed with P90X.

  7. congratulations girl! I love running and it's always fun to see other people fall in love with it too! I usually do google searches to find races in my area... also if there are any specialized running stores in your area they usually have a pretty comprehensive list of local upcoming events and running clubs!

  8. Good job on your run! 31 minutes??!!?? that's awesome. pretty sure I'd take an hour, haha, I'm working on my stamina. I have been to a lot of marathons to cheer on my BFs mother. I have actually just started running, I don't think I'm anywhere close to doing anykind of marathon, but they seem like so much fun, atleast once your conditioned to do one! :)

  11. Congratulations, that's a huge accomplishment!

I love the heels, I used to have a pair of blue suede peep toes and ended up finding a pair of beighe work slacks with pale blue pinstriping that coordinated perfectly. You'll make it work!

  12. Whoot whoot!! Cogratulations! My husband and I are training for a 5K sometime in the Fall. We found a list of runs at our local sports/shoe/bike store called Sports Spectrum and they gave us a list of the runs in our area for the entire year. Maybe there is a store like that near y'all that could help you find more races? Good luck with all the training, and you'll have to let us know what you think about the running skirt, because I have been thinking about getting one :)

I hope you have a beautiful week! XO

  13. Congrats on finishing your first race! I love running skirts and really haven't worn shorts since. On occasion I find really great workout shirts and sports bras at TJ Maxx, Ross, Marshalls, etc. It's completely hit or miss but I have gotten some great Under Armour and Nike things for super cheap (like $7.99 cheap). I also love Lululemon, they're stuff is fantastic. Have a great day!

  15. Congratulations!!! How very exciting. You look adorable in your picture, and it sounds like the race was really comfy for you. When I last ran a 5K I almost had a stroke :( Obviously I need a bit more training!

And the shopping...great finds!! I love the Short Pump Mall. So glad it's a bit further away from me or I'd be broke for sure!
