Our Newest Addition

Meet the newest addition to our family: Mason!

We've known we wanted to get a dog for awhile now and had been searching online, but neither of us had really found what we had in mind. I am a huge fan of adopting shelter dogs (and puppies!), but when I visited the SPCA in town last week and didn't find someone I loved I was feeling a little discouraged. Nicholas and I decided to try the SPCA in Staunton, VA (about 45 minutes away) on Saturday and just fell in love with this little pup! We couldn't take him home that day (we forgot to bring Poe Cat's rabies vaccination certificate!), so I picked him up bright and early (ok not really early, but right when they opened) on Monday morning. He's such a sweetie and FULL of energy!

He's 7 1/2 weeks old right now and so teeny! The lady at the SPCA told us they thought he would get to be about 40 or 50 lbs, but right now the Poe Cat is easily three times bigger than Mason! Poe Cat isn't too sure what to think of him. Mason bounces around and tries to play with Poe, but he isn't really having any of it. Poe Cat spends a lot of time just staring at Mason trying to figure out why he has so much energy!

Please ignore the fact that I'm making the same goofy face that I'm sure I made in several awkward elementary school class pictures.  Mason just looks so adorable in this one!  Look at those darling puppy eyes!

We definitely have our hands full with our new little pup right now! I took him for his first vet check up and it went really well. We're working on crate and potty training and it's super exciting, but so tiring! Does anyone have any puppy training tips/experience?

I have a couple blog posts that I've been meaning to write, but Mason has been keeping me pretty well occupied!  Several super sweet bloggers were nice enough to tag me for a couple blog awards that I will definitely be passing on soon and I have (yet another) mascara review to share with y'all.  You know I'm always on the hunt for an even better fabulously dramatic mascara!

  1. He's adorable! My cats acted the same way when my husband brought Spencer home. I am sure Poe Cat will grow to love Mason. Or at least tolerate him. ;-)

  2. Oh my gosh! What a cutie! We just adopted a puppy not long ago and he is 17 weeks now. It is rough going at first. After having him for two weeks, I had post-puppy depression and wanted to give him back - he was so much work and it was so exhausting! But after that it got better and he is so fun. Persistence is the key. Remember to constantly say the commands you want them to learn and praise praise praise whenever he does anything you like! And if he has trouble sleeping in the crate, a blanket over the crate does wonders. Ours has no problems at night but if I crate him during the day, he doesn't like it and the blanket helps a lot! Good luck!

  3. He is so adorable! I can't help but agree that persistance is so important, once your dog knows you mean business they will figure out what they should and shouldn't do. Some, like mine, just take a little longer than others.

  9. He is so adorable! What a sweet boy! Yay for adopting a shelter pet! My Oscar came from one of our local shelters and I always get so excited when I know of people giving animals who really need it a good home. He is the cutest thing - he looks like he already adores you!

  12. YAY!!!! A new baby :)

Lord, do I have some advice for you!!! I thought the first month with Louis was going to be the death of me. Everyone kept telling me that one day it would magically "click" with him, but I thought "no, no...not this pup. he's never going to get it." And then...he did!!

I would most definitely tell you that the worst part is hearing him cry when it's bed time. So, so heart breaking...but stick with it!! Now Louis loves his crate. He always goes into it when there are lots of
people over and it's loud. It's his "safe place". Also, with potty training...I gave him treats GALORE. People told me I gave him too many, but for any peep or poo he got cheese. Tons of it. He was 90% potty trained in 1.5 months :)

  13. Congrats on the new addition!! He's so adorable. One tip I have is to crate train. It keeps destruction down while your away and also makes him easy to be found in case an emergency happens while you're not home.

I can't wait to hear your adventures as a new mommy.

  14. He is sooo adorable!!!! DDS has some great advice about the night crying at heart breaking as it is - you have to stick with crating and not go get him. Having said that I did find I slept a few nights on the floor beside Dolce's crate with my fingers through the grills. He is your new Doggie-son!!!

I hope Mason ... decides to post about his new adventures as he goes along. Dolce does a little post on Fridays..

    P.S. I don't know if you have seen it- I left somethig for you on my blog a few days back. Just in case you missed it you can find it here;

  16. OMG!!! Mason is sooo dang adorable!!! I love him already! :)
We're also looking for a puppy too, but not for another month... especially with all our travel plans and events these next couple weeks.
Only piece of advice I can give is as much as we think a kennel/cage is like a jail... it's their "safe" place and they love it. Our Marley retreats to his kennel when he gets stressed/nervous.
Congrats on your new addition!!! :)
